Get your child reading! A comprehensive set of resources (34 word families and 50 consonant sounds) to help your child start reading English.
English is a non-phonetic language. This means that there isn’t a direct relationship between how a word is said and how it is written. For example the sound combination -ight makes the sound ‘ite’ (eg, night). This is why teaching word families is important. Word families (or sound families) will help your child decode a group of sounds, without having to interpret these each time. Word families form the sound roots of words. For example, once your child has learnt the sound combination -ight, he can read ‘light’ and even longer words like ‘lighten’.
Word families 1 will teach your child 34 of the most important word families. Each word family has a word list that uses these sounds. There is also a deck of 50 consonant sounds (singletons, diagraphs and consonant clusters) that she can use to make new words.
These decks can be used in 4 ways: 1) Practice 50 consonant sounds 2) Practise 34 word families 3) Practise word lists for each word family 4) Make new words using consonant and word families decks together.
