30 Audio-Enabled Story Sequence Flashcards for Building Narrative, Language and Early Comprehension Skills

Being able to put events in order is an important part of language development. Children need to understand what happened first, what happened next, and what happened last before they can confidently retell events, describe experiences and build longer stories.

Story Sequences helps children understand, organise and retell simple events in the correct order using familiar picture sequences.

The 30 audio-enabled cards use two- and three-step visual sequences to help children develop narrative skills, vocabulary, sentence building, listening, comprehension and logical thinking.

With the support of the Chatter Bugs app, children can also listen to language models while following the pictures, giving them an additional way to hear and practise the language associated with each story.

Is your child ready to move from describing pictures to telling a story?

This resource can help if you want to:

  • Help your child understand first, next and last

  • Develop the ability to sequence events in the correct order

  • Encourage your child to describe what is happening in a picture

  • Build vocabulary through familiar actions, objects and events

  • Help children move from single-picture descriptions to connected ideas

  • Develop longer phrases and sentences

  • Encourage children to retell simple stories

  • Strengthen listening and comprehension

  • Develop early prediction and reasoning skills

  • Build confidence using language to explain what happened

Why are story sequences important?

Language is not just about knowing individual words. Children also need to understand how events connect.

A simple sequence might show:

First → A girl plants a seed.

Next → The plant grows.

Last → The girl picks a flower.

When children put the pictures in order and talk about what they see, they are practising how to connect people, actions and events into a meaningful sequence.

This provides an important foundation for describing experiences, retelling stories, answering questions and eventually creating their own narratives.

From pictures to connected language

Story Sequences supports an important progression in language development:

Seeing → Understanding → Sequencing → Describing → Connecting ideas → Retelling

A child might begin by identifying what they see:

“Girl.”

Then describe an action:

“Girl planting.”

Then connect the ideas:

“Girl planting seed.”

And eventually describe the sequence:

“First she plants the seed. Then it grows. Last she picks the flower.”

The aim is to help children move beyond individual words or isolated descriptions and begin using language to connect events and communicate a complete idea.

Audio-enabled for listening and language modelling

Story Sequences is audio-enabled through the Chatter Bugs app, allowing children to listen to language models while following the visual sequence.

Children can:

  • Look at the pictures

  • Listen to the language model

  • Identify what is happening

  • Repeat key words and phrases

  • Describe each event

  • Arrange the events in order

  • Retell the sequence using their own words

The combination of visual sequencing and audio language support gives children repeated opportunities to hear how ideas can be expressed and connected.

Where does this fit in your child's language journey?

Story Sequences is designed for children aged 3+ who are ready to move from individual words and simple descriptions towards more connected language, storytelling and comprehension.

It can form part of a progression such as:

Learning words → Combining words → Describing → Sequencing → Retelling → Narrative → Conversation

This makes Story Sequences particularly useful when a child is beginning to use sentences but needs support to organise ideas, describe events and connect one event to another.

What skills does Story Sequences develop?

Narrative skills

Children practise putting events in order and retelling what happened.

Vocabulary

Each sequence introduces meaningful words connected to familiar people, actions, objects and situations.

Sentence building

Children can practise turning individual words and observations into phrases and sentences.

Listening and comprehension

Children listen to language and connect what they hear with the events shown in the pictures.

Logical thinking

Sequencing requires children to understand relationships between events and recognise what logically happens before or after something else.

Prediction and reasoning

Once children understand a sequence, they can begin thinking about what might happen next and explaining why.

Early reading comprehension

The ability to understand characters, actions, events and sequence provides an important foundation for understanding stories later in reading.

How to use the cards

Start with a two-step sequence. Let your child look carefully at both pictures and decide what happens first and what happens next.

Ask simple questions such as:

“What happened first?”

“What is happening now?”

“What happens next?”

“What happened last?”

Once your child is comfortable with two-step sequences, introduce three-step sequences.

Encourage your child to:

  • Put the pictures in the correct order

  • Point to and name familiar objects

  • Describe what each person is doing

  • Listen to the audio

  • Repeat key words or phrases

  • Answer questions about the sequence

  • Predict what might happen next

  • Retell the whole story in their own words

Don't worry about perfect sentences. The goal is to help children gradually learn to organise their thoughts and communicate connected ideas.

Who can use Story Sequences?

Story Sequences is designed for flexible use by:

  • Parents and caregivers

  • Early-years educators

  • Teachers

  • Speech and language professionals

  • Children developing expressive language

  • Children who benefit from visual learning

  • Children learning English as an additional language

It can be used during short, focused language activities or naturally incorporated into conversation and storytelling.

Designed for meaningful language development

Brainy Bug Resources creates language-development resources designed by speech therapists and child-development specialists with hands-on clinical and classroom experience.

Our resources are built around developmental progression, with vocabulary chosen for its relevance to children's real-world experiences and skills introduced in a sequence that supports growing communication.

Story Sequences extends that journey beyond individual words and sentences, helping children use language to organise, connect and communicate ideas.

The illustrations also reflect familiar contexts for children growing up in India, helping make concepts easier to understand and relate to.

A step towards confident storytelling

When children learn to put events in order, they are learning more than sequencing.

They are learning how to understand what happened, explain what happened, and tell someone else about it.

Story Sequences gives children a visual and audio-supported way to practise that journey:

See it → Understand it → Sequence it → Describe it → Connect it → Retell it

With repeated practice, children can become more confident using language to explain events, answer questions, make predictions and tell simple stories.

Brainy Bug Resources creates language development resources for children, designed by speech therapists and child development specialists with hands-on clinical and classroom experience. Every product is built around developmental norms — vocabulary is chosen for its relevance to a child's real world, sequenced in the order children naturally acquire language, and illustrated with culturally familiar Indian imagery. Our resources take children from single words all the way through to sentences, verbal reasoning, and conversational skills. Used by parents, teachers, and speech therapists wherever children are learning to communicate.

Every word in every deck is chosen deliberately — not for novelty, but because it matters to a child's life and language growth. Our resources follow the developmental sequence children naturally use to acquire language, which means learning builds correctly from the start. Illustrations reflect the Indian context children actually live in, making concepts easier to grasp and retain. Select decks are audio-enabled via the Chatter Bugs app, giving children access to pronunciation support and content in up to 9 languages including Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Punjabi. Our range spans the full learning journey — from a child's first words to advanced skills like narrative, reasoning, and question forms — so parents and professionals can find the right resource at every stage.
