30 Audio-Enabled Action Word Flashcards for Building First Verbs and Early Vocabulary

Action words are an important part of early language development. They help children move beyond simply naming objects and begin talking about what people and things are doing.

Action Words – Level 1 introduces children to 30 fundamental, high-frequency verbs that young children are likely to encounter in everyday life. The cards provide a simple, engaging way to see, hear, understand and practise these important first action words.

Each card is audio-enabled, allowing children to hear the target action word spoken aloud while looking at the illustration. This gives children repeated opportunities to connect the picture, spoken word and meaning.

Is your child ready to learn their first action words?

This resource can help if your child is:

  • Beginning to build their first vocabulary

  • Learning to understand and name familiar actions

  • Using nouns but beginning to need more action words

  • Starting to talk about what people and things are doing

  • Learning new words through pictures and repetition

  • Beginning to move from naming objects to describing actions

  • Building the vocabulary they will eventually use in two-word combinations

Why are action words important?

Children need more than nouns to communicate.

Knowing words such as “dog,” “mummy,” “ball” gives a child a way to name things. Action words give them a way to talk about what is happening.

For example:

“Running.”

“Eating.”

“Sleeping.”

“Jumping.”

These words become especially powerful when children begin combining them with words they already know:

“Dog running.”

“Mummy eating.”

“Baby sleeping.”

Learning action words therefore provides an important foundation for moving from single words towards two-word combinations.

Audio-enabled for hearing and learning

Every card in this deck is audio-enabled, giving children an opportunity to hear the target action word spoken aloud.

Children can:

  • Look at the picture

  • Listen to the action word

  • Point to the action

  • Repeat the word

  • Act out the action

  • Find the same action in everyday life

  • Practise using the word in context

The combination of visual and audio input provides additional support for children learning new vocabulary and gives them repeated opportunities to hear and practise the target word.

From naming things to talking about actions

Action Words – Level 1 supports an important early step in language development:

Naming → Action words → Combining words → Early phrases

A child may already know:

“Ball.”

Learning an action word gives them another way to communicate:

“Roll.”

As their vocabulary grows, these words can eventually be combined:

“Ball roll.”

The goal at this stage is not to expect complete sentences. It is to give children a strong foundation of useful action words that they can understand and begin using in communication.

30 everyday action words

The 30 verbs in this deck focus on high-frequency actions that children are likely to see and experience in everyday life.

This helps make vocabulary meaningful and easier to connect with real experiences.

Children can encounter the words while looking at the cards and then notice the same actions during:

  • Play

  • Mealtimes

  • Bath time

  • Getting dressed

  • Outdoor activities

  • Family routines

  • Books and stories

  • Everyday conversations

The aim is to help children move from learning a word on a card to recognising and using that word in the real world.

What skills does this resource support?

Early vocabulary

Introduces children to important, everyday action words.

Verb understanding

Helps children connect actions with the words used to describe them.

Expressive language

Encourages children to name and talk about familiar actions.

Comprehension

Helps children understand what people and things are doing.

Listening

Audio support gives children repeated opportunities to hear the target vocabulary.

Early communication

Provides useful words that children can begin using during play and everyday routines.

Foundation for word combinations

Builds the verb vocabulary children need as they progress towards combining words.

Where does this fit in your child's language journey?

Action Words – Level 1 is designed as an early step in building a child's verb vocabulary.

A possible progression is:

First words → Action words → Two-word combinations → Longer phrases → Sentences

Once children have developed a foundation of action words, Action Words – Level 2 can provide a broader range of verbs and support the next stage of vocabulary development.

For children ready to practise using action words within sentences, Action Words in Sentences provides a further step towards sentence making.

How to use the cards

Introduce a few action words at a time. Show your child the picture and listen to the audio together.

Say the word again and encourage your child to repeat it or act it out.

You can then:

  • Ask your child to point to the action

  • Listen to the audio together

  • Encourage your child to repeat the word

  • Act out the action

  • Look for the action in everyday life

  • Use the word naturally during play

  • Combine the action with a familiar word when your child is ready

For example:

“Running.”

Then, when your child is ready:

“Dog running.”

Keep practice short, playful and repetitive. The goal is to help children understand and use useful words, rather than simply memorise them.

Who can use Action Words – Level 1?

This resource can be used by:

  • Parents and caregivers

  • Early-years educators

  • Teachers

  • Speech and language professionals

  • Children developing early expressive language

  • Children who benefit from visual and audio learning

  • Children learning English as an additional language

The cards can be used in short, focused activities or naturally incorporated into play, conversation and everyday routines.
