30 Audio-Enabled Action Word Flashcards for Moving from Single Words to Two-Word Combinations
Action words are an important part of early language development. They help children talk about what people and things are doing, understand everyday situations, and begin putting words together to express simple ideas.
Action Words – Level 2 is designed to help children expand their action-word vocabulary and make an important step in language development: moving from single words to two-word combinations.
Each card presents a clear, familiar action through an engaging illustration, with audio support that allows children to hear the word spoken aloud. This gives children repeated opportunities to connect the picture, spoken word and meaning.
Is your child ready to move beyond single words?
This resource can help if your child is beginning to use individual words and is ready to start combining words.
It can help you:
-
Expand your child's vocabulary with meaningful, everyday action words
-
Help your child understand and name a wider range of verbs
-
Encourage children to talk about what people are doing
-
Move from single-word labels to simple two-word combinations
-
Build the vocabulary needed to begin putting words together
-
Give children repeated opportunities to hear, understand and use verbs
-
Encourage early expressive language during play and everyday activities
Why are action words important?
Children need verbs to move from simply naming things to talking about what is happening.
A child may begin with a single word:
“Dog.”
With an action word, that vocabulary can begin to grow into a two-word combination:
“Dog running.”
Or:
“Mummy.” → “Mummy cooking.”
“Boy.” → “Boy jumping.”
These simple combinations are an important step towards expressing more complete ideas.
By building a wider vocabulary of action words, children have more opportunities to combine words and communicate who is doing what.
From single words to two words
Action Words – Level 2 supports an important transition in early language development:
Single words → Two-word combinations
Children can first learn to recognise and understand an action:
“Running.”
Then begin combining the action with another meaningful word:
“Boy running.”
“Dog jumping.”
“Mummy cooking.”
The aim is not simply to teach children more verbs. It is to give them useful words that they can begin combining with the words they already know.
Audio-enabled for listening and learning
Every card is audio-enabled, giving children an additional way to learn and reinforce each word.
Children can:
-
See the action
-
Hear the action word
-
Repeat the word
-
Connect the spoken word with the picture
-
Practise using the word independently
The combination of visual and audio input makes the cards especially useful for repeated vocabulary practice and encourages children to hear and use words in a meaningful context.
Where does this fit in your child's language journey?
Action Words – Level 2 is designed for children who are ready to expand their vocabulary and begin moving from individual words towards two-word combinations.
It can form part of a progression such as:
Learning words → Learning action words → Combining two words → Building longer phrases → Building sentences
Once children are confidently combining words, they can continue towards more developed sentence structures with resources that specifically support action words in sentences.
What makes these action words useful?
The 30 words in this deck have been selected to support practical, everyday communication.
Children encounter actions that they can recognise in familiar situations, giving them meaningful vocabulary they can use when talking about people, objects and events around them.
This makes the cards useful for:
-
Early vocabulary building at home
-
Supporting children moving from single words to two-word combinations
-
Language activities in early-years settings
-
Classroom learning

Designed for meaningful language learning
Brainy Bug Resources creates language-development resources designed to support children as their communication skills develop.
Our vocabulary is carefully selected to help children progress from understanding words to using them meaningfully. The illustrations provide clear visual context, while the audio gives children an opportunity to hear the target word spoken aloud.
The resources can be used flexibly by parents, educators and professionals according to the child's individual stage and learning goals.
How to use the cards
Start by introducing a few familiar action words at a time. Show the picture, listen to the audio together, and say the word clearly.
Once your child understands the action word, encourage them to combine it with another word they already know.
For example:
“Running.”
→ “Boy running.”
Or:
“Eating.”
→ “Baby eating.”
You can also encourage your child to:
-
Point to the correct action
-
Listen to and repeat the audio
-
Act out the action
-
Find the same action in everyday life
-
Combine the action word with a person, object or other familiar word
-
Use the words naturally during play and everyday routines
Keep the activity playful and follow your child's lead. Repeated exposure and meaningful use are more important than expecting perfect sentences.
A small step that opens up bigger communication
Moving from a single word to two words is a meaningful step in a child's language journey.
A child who can say “car” can begin to say “car going.”
A child who knows “mummy” can begin to say “mummy cooking.”
With more action words, children have more opportunities to combine the vocabulary they already have and communicate increasingly meaningful ideas.
Action Words – Level 2 gives children the words, audio support and visual context they need to take that next step.

- Who We Are
- What Makes Us Unique
Brainy Bug Resources creates language development resources for children, designed by speech therapists and child development specialists with hands-on clinical and classroom experience. Every product is built around developmental norms — vocabulary is chosen for its relevance to a child's real world, sequenced in the order children naturally acquire language, and illustrated with culturally familiar Indian imagery. Our resources take children from single words all the way through to sentences, verbal reasoning, and conversational skills. Used by parents, teachers, and speech therapists wherever children are learning to communicate.
Every word in every deck is chosen deliberately — not for novelty, but because it matters to a child's life and language growth. Our resources follow the developmental sequence children naturally use to acquire language, which means learning builds correctly from the start. Illustrations reflect the Indian context children actually live in, making concepts easier to grasp and retain. Select decks are audio-enabled via the Chatter Bugs app, giving children access to pronunciation support and content in up to 9 languages including Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Punjabi. Our range spans the full learning journey — from a child's first words to advanced skills like narrative, reasoning, and question forms — so parents and professionals can find the right resource at every stage.
